Pivac rallies Scarlets ahead of historic semi-final
Scarlets coach Wayne Pivac has encouraged his team to “make history” by progressing to their first European competition final.
The club will play Pro14 rivals Leinster in the European Rugby Champions Cup semi-final on Saturday for a spot in May’s final.
The match will be Scarlets’ fourth appearance at this stage of a European tournament, with two previous showings in the club’s old guise of Llanelli RFC.
Despite never progressing to the final, Pivac has no doubts as to how big an achievement it would be for the Welsh team:
It would be the biggest moment in this club’s history outside of beating the All Blacks in 1972,
It will be nice to have the opportunity to go a step further in this competition. We certainly know it is going to be a massive task.
In between them and the final in Bilbao however will be a red-hot Leinster squad – a fact the coach is all too aware of:
Leinster are the form horse, and we are going to have to have probably our best performance so far as a group.
We’d love to create some history and we’re going to enjoy the whole week.
The encounter will be a rematch of last year’s Pro12 final. Ending 27-15 in favour of Scarlets, the achievement was particularly impressive given the fact the team lost winger Steff Evans to a red card in the first half.
