Israel Folau avoids sanction for anti-gay comments
Rugby Australia will not punish Israel Folau for his anti-gay remarks, the BBC report.
The Australian Player of the Year said on social media that sinners, including gay people, would end up in hell.
Following this, Folau explained his remarks in various ways, saying that his religious beliefs were an explanation for his thoughts. He also stated that he too was a sinner.
CEO of Rugby Australia Raelene Castle said they understood the reasons for his view.
Israel clearly articulated his religious beliefs and why his faith is important to him, and has provided context behind his social media comment. In his own words, Israel said that he did not intend to upset people intentionally or bring hurt to the game. We accept Israel’s position.
After the latest controversy concerning the Australian, the 29-year-old offered to walk away from his contract if it was becoming too much of a problem.
Last year, Folau opposed the same-sex marriage campaign via his Twitter which led to a disagreement with teammates.
