Billy Burns: The injury came at a bad time
Although Gloucester finally got back to winning ways on Friday- beating Exeter Chiefs 16-9- the last few weeks have not been the best for the club.
Following an impressive 13-10 over Wasps, Gloucester proceeded on a run of five consecutive defeats, including being knocked out of the European Challenge Cup by Newport Gwent Dragons.
The Wasps win was a bittersweet victory, however as fly-half, Billy Burns was carried off with a serious knee injury. Before the win against Wasps, Burns had been starring at both, fly-half and full-back for Gloucester. Unfortunately for both he and Gloucester, Burns will miss the remainder of the season. The serious injury, is something new for the 21 year-old, but he told premiershiprugby.com that he is looking to return to action as quickly as possible.
The injury isn’t too bad – it was a little bit rubbish timing-wise but I didn’t have a bad run this year, so I can’t complain too much. I’m rehabbing hard at the moment so I can hopefully get back for preseason and be ready for the new campaign. It’s just one of those things you have to deal with I guess. It was definitely frustrating to get injured because I felt like I was in a good vein of form and was enjoying my rugby whether that be at fly-half or full-back. I don’t think there is ever a good time to get injured but it wasn’t the best. But I’ve been pretty lucky in my career so far, I’ve not had too many serious injuries, so I’ll get over this one and come back ready to fire next season.
The former England under-20 international also spoke of his disappointment at the timing of the injury. He does believe, however, that the squad and coaching staff have what it takes to finish the season with a flourish.
We’ve got a great coaching staff and a great group of players and we know we’re capable of more than that. We want to finish the season, put some pride back in the shirt, go out there and play well for the fans.
